Create Complex, Believable Characters: How to Use the Character Development Assistant

Let’s talk character development! If you want to create psychologically complex, multidimensional characters that readers truly connect with, the Character Development Assistant in Pen Pal is your new best friend. This tool is designed to help you think critically, ask the right questions, and unlock details about your characters you may not have otherwise considered. You’ll need a free trial if you want to try it, otherwise you can just watch the video below!

Let’s dive into how it works!

Step 1: Open the Character Development Assistant

As with all tools in the Pen Pal suite, you’ll need to ensure you’re in the Pen Pal section of Tribescribe. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you see the prompt: “Choose a prompt from the right.” Once you’re ready, clear anything lingering in the workspace and locate the Character Development Assistant at the top of the list. Click to open it!

Once it launches, the Assistant will introduce itself as the Character Psychology Agent and explain how it’s designed to help you. Its job is to guide you through building psychologically rich and believable characters, and it offers plenty of prompts and guidance to get you started.

Step 2: Provide Basic Details About Your Character

The Assistant will start by asking some foundational questions about your character. For example:

  • What is your character’s role in the story?
  • What’s their current situation or primary challenge?

Let’s take Angela—one of my own characters—as an example. Here’s the basic information I provided to the Assistant:

  • Angela is Peter Pan’s great-granddaughter.
  • She’s 13 years old and has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Her mom has sent her to Neverland, hoping it might save her life.

With just this brief overview, the Assistant was able to start diving deeper into Angela’s development by asking more meaningful, layered questions.

Step 3: Dive Deeper with Thought-Provoking Prompts

Once you provide an initial snapshot of your character, the Assistant really starts to shine. It will ask thought-provoking questions designed to explore your character’s psyche, history, and motivations. For Angela, here are some of the questions it asked:

  • How does Angela view her family legacy?
  • Does she feel a connection to Neverland, or is this her first exposure to it?
  • How has Angela been coping with her illness?

You can choose to answer as many of these questions as you’d like. The more information you provide, the more detailed feedback and insights the tool can generate. Alternatively, you can use these questions as a brainstorming tool to step outside your usual creative process and explore themes or aspects of your character you hadn’t yet considered.

Step 4: Use the Tool to Think Outside the Box

One of the best things about this Assistant is its ability to ask questions that you might not think to consider on your own. For example:

  • Does Angela feel pressure due to her family’s legacy?
  • How does her illness affect her view of the world or her decisions?
  • How might she be changed by her arrival in Neverland?

As writers, we can get tunnel vision when developing our characters, but this tool encourages you to look at your creation from new angles. Even if all the information you generate doesn’t make it into your story, knowing these details will give your character that layered complexity readers love.

Why Character Depth Matters

Believable characters are the backbone of every great story. Their experiences, motivations, and quirks not only make them relatable but also serve to enrich your plot and themes. Even details that don’t explicitly appear on the page—like their view of their family legacy or their coping mechanisms in difficult situations—help create a fuller, richer character in your mind and inevitably shine through in your writing.

Give It a Try!

The Character Development Assistant is an invaluable tool for crafting complex characters and exploring untapped areas of their personalities, histories, and challenges. Whether you’re developing the protagonist of your novel, building secondary characters, or even fleshing out a minor role, this Assistant will guide you along the way.
