How to Use the Overused Word Checker: Eliminate Overused Words with Tribescribe

As writers, we all have those pesky little words we rely on a bit too often without even realizing it. The Overused Word Checker in Tribescribe’s Pen Pal Writing Assistant suite is an invaluable tool for catching repetition before it makes your writing feel redundant or tiresome. It helps you identify patterns and decide whether to vary, cut, or keep those repeated words—all while maintaining your unique writing rhythm. Ready to see how it works? Let’s dive in.

Step 1: Start Fresh

When switching between tools in the Pen Pal section (e.g., moving from the Character Development Assistant to the Overused Word Checker), I recommend starting a new chat. This keeps things clean, organized, and avoids confusing the AI. A new topic calls for a fresh workspace, leaving you ready to focus solely on checking for overused words.

Make sure you’re still in the Pen Pal area of Tribescribe. If you are, you’ll see the familiar sidebar on the right-hand side with all the writing tools. Click the Overused Word Checker, and you’re ready to go.

Step 2: Analyze Your Text for Overused Words

Once the tool is open, it will say something like: “Please share the text passage you’d like me to analyze.” Go ahead and paste your text into the chat box. Before analyzing, it’s worth noting that you can supply additional details such as:

  • Specific words or patterns you’d like the tool to focus on.
  • Terms to exclude (e.g., a character’s name or genre-specific vocabulary).
  • Your preferred overuse threshold (e.g., no more than 3–5 repetitions).

For example, in a 440-word story, you might set a threshold of no more than 3–5 repetitions for certain words, not including essentials like articles (the, a, etc.) or intentionally repeated concepts. Once you’ve set your preferences, hit “Go” and let the tool do its magic.

Step 3: Explore the Results

This is where the Overused Word Checker shines. Rather than giving you a simple block of feedback, it organizes the results into boxes or sections, which makes them easier to read and digest. Here are a few highlights of what it provides:

  • Word Count Analysis: See the total number of words analyzed and how many significant patterns of repetition were detected.
  • Identified Patterns: The tool highlights words or phrases that appear frequently and offers suggestions on how to address them.
  • Contextual Insights: It flags words that might be intentionally repeated for emphasis and asks if you’d like to keep them or vary them for rhythm or flow.

For example, say the tool flagged the phrase “if only” multiple times in your text. It might suggest: “Consider whether to maintain this strong repetition for emphasis or vary it slightly for rhythm.” This nuanced approach ensures that the tool doesn’t just blindly recommend cutting words but instead helps you decide what serves your writing best.

Step 4: Dig into the Details

If a particular word surprises you (or doesn’t), you can explore further. For instance, the tool might not flag a word that appears often but is integral to your story—like a character’s name (Angela) or a key theme (oil, for a story titled Oil). If that’s the case, it’s possible the tool recognized its purposeful use and decided it wasn’t overly repetitive. However, you can also ask the tool to focus specifically on flagged words or patterns for a more targeted deep dive.

The results are fully customizable, so you can decide what to take from them:

  • Keep intentional repetitions for emphasis.
  • Replace or reduce repeated words to improve flow.
  • Take notes on patterns you might want to revisit later.

Why Use the Overused Word Checker?

There’s nothing wrong with leaning on favorite words—it’s natural as writers! But when those words become too frequent, they can slow down the reader or distract from the story. The Overused Word Checker ensures you strike the right balance, offering suggestions without forcing you to make changes.

One of its best features is its ability to recognize when repetition is intentional. If a repeated word adds rhythm, emphasis, or style to your story, the tool will flag it but leave the ultimate decision in your hands. This gives you greater confidence in your choices while encouraging intentionality in your writing.

Give It a Try!

The Overused Word Checker is perfect for writers who want to fine-tune their prose and eliminate unnecessary repetition without sacrificing their creative intent. Whether you’re preparing a manuscript for an editor, smoothing out a short story, or polishing your next blog post, this tool gives you the clarity and precision you need.
