Description
How deadlines help us be more productive.
Transcript
I don’t like deadlines. They stress me out, but they seem to be what makes me work. Mmm. There’s a reason for that. So in this video, this creator is talking about how she had all the time in the world.
One day, 8 hours to sit and write, got nothing done. Next day, only had about 20 minutes to get stuff done, and boom, focused. The words were pouring out, got a ton done. And I’m sure we all can relate to this feeling. Well, all of us writers at least.
And there’s actually a scientific reason why this is the case, why these deadlines help us focus. And I cannot edit this when it’s a stitch, so don’t mind me. I’m actually going to be reading my notes. So stress actually helps us. Stress?
Yes, stress helps us focus our attention and concentrate for short periods of time. So if you think about how you feel when you have a short deadline or something needs to be done right now, it’s kind of an emergency. You need to get it done. You feel super focused, right? You kind of almost block out the rest of the world.
You have that ability that you don’t have when you have 8 hours to get something done. It’s because stress releases adrenaline and epinephrine, which helps us narrow our focus. So adrenaline prepares our body for that fight or flight mode. So it’s gonna pump blood, pump oxygen to our muscles, it’s going to send blood to the heart and lungs. So you’re going to feel more energetic, you’re going to get an energy burst, and then epinephrine does the same thing, but also stimulates our nervous system and places our vision in tunnel mode.
So we’re super, super focused. So if you want to feel more productive and get more done, set a deadline. Even if you don’t like them, they work because science, and to cite my sources, I actually learned all this from the Huberman Lab podcast. So Huberman is a really interesting, informative guy. His podcasts are super long and really dense, but he’s got some good information in there if you can kind of wade through it all.
Or you could just have somebody relay the information to you like I just did. So I hope that helps. Setting a deadline is actually part of the creative warrior path, which is a method I came up with for fighting creativity. If you want to learn more about the path and all the other steps in the path, just hang out with me here on my TikTok profile, whatever we call these, I don’t know. Follow me.
Thanks, bye.
