This Amazon tactic isn’t actually a bad things.

You guys, did you know that Amazon reducing the price of your book is actually a good thing? Here’s the tea. Oh, okay. Well, the coffee. Anywho, this post is for self published authors who have books published on KDP.
And this comment was on one of my videos about why indie books can be more expensive than traditionally published books. You can go check that out if you would like. But they made this comment that Amazon can reduce your book without consent, the price of your book, and can make it like 17% off. And they were worried about that. Understandably.
That is a freaky thing. This is a common, common misconception that this is bad. So one thing I want to point out is that when you signed whatever you signed to put your book on KDP, you actually gave them permission to do that. So. But it’s not a bad thing when they drop the price of your book.
I’m gonna say this right up front. You still get the same royalty rate that that you get. So the royalty rate you get is still based on your full price. So you’re still getting, you get 60%, 60% to 70% depending on what royalty rate you chose and your printing costs. You’re still getting that off of, say your book is normally $16.99.
They drop at 17%. You’re still getting 60% of $16.99. So math that out and that’s a good thing. So you can take advantage of this, of Amazon dropping the price of your books. And they do this for a couple of reasons.
Sometimes they do it because your book isn’t selling and they think dropping the price is going to help some more copies. Yes. But sometimes they do it on books that are selling a lot. And so they want to continue to gain momentum on the sale of that book. So it could be good or bad.
Either way, you still get the same royalty amount. So if you go on Amazon, they’re not going to tell you when this is happening. But if you go on your listing and see that your book is discounted, shout about it. Tell your readers that your book is on sale. Use it as an incentive to buy.
Make sure to say it’s a short term sale or it won’t last long or something, because you don’t actually control when they will change the price. But use it. Use it as a promo. Tell them my book is 17% off right now. You can get it for a limited time, which means they have to go buy your book right then if they want to get that discounted price.
So it’s a good thing Amazon does drop the price of your book, it can be unexpected. They don’t have to get your permission. That was in the contract you signed when you published on KDP, but you still get the same amount of royalties off of the list price, so it’s generally a good thing. I know it can be scary at first, but there you go. So when you see Amazon drop the price of your book, don’t freak out.
Instead, spread the news. Share the news. Incentivize readers to go buy your book. Hope that was helpful.
